J’s Kale Salad

March 15th, 2017 by admin

Jonah regularly makes us a massaged kale salad he learned to make in the school garden. Lilah volunteers as a taster.

She is three

In the blink of an eye, she is a walking, talking, fully human, practically potty-trained, fillibustering family member. She is strong headed and bold. She hurts our ears and fills our hearts.

A little retrospective of the past year…

Friends over

February 18th, 2017 by admin

Some fun occasions with friends–from NYE, to dinner with pals, to Lee’s birthday and prepping for the Women’s March–below are some snaps of recent gatherings here. We are just learning how to set-up for groups — kids downstairs and sit-down dinners for adults; dance parties and delicious food; creative spaces. We want our kids to grow up knowing the warmth of community in this house. We’re just figuring out how to do it, but we’re having a good time finding our way…

Holiday Break + Hanukkah

February 2nd, 2017 by admin

Just some things we did during our 2 week break. Also, I’m so in love with these people!

We got operated on (only a few hours post-op here)

We sunset gazed on winter solstice

We partied. (Family party at Lilah’s preschool. She is so proud to host us. Jonah is enjoying the nosh with cheeks full of food.)

We listened

We danced

We read

We cuddled

We crunched

We smiled

We remote controled

We remembered to look up

We folded (origami books)

We cracked (and ate our weight in crab)

We strolled (the neighborhood luminaria stroll on the first night of Hanukkah / Xmas eve)

We played with fuego

We fell in love

We hid

We experimented

We lit

We tattooed

We oy vey’ed

We played…

And rocked…

And slid…

And got treats at Tartine!

First haircut

Um, so I took Lilah for her first hair trim at the same place we take Jonah. It is a nice spot, they do a nice job and the price is only a couple dollars more than SuperCuts but the quality is superior. So naturally, that is where I brought Lilah. The ends of her hair are constantly in knots, so I just asked for them to be trimmed off. No major changes. Just a trim. It was a simple and clear request.

So she got the trim, which was great. But for a moment while I turned my attention to Jonah, I missed that he started to give Lilah a complete blowout! WTF — she’s 2 years old!

But she was brave and we rinsed that night and all was well with the world. Please enjoy, particularly the flashdance moment.

I haven’t run consistently since before Jonah was born. But this summer, a few months after knee surgery, I was moved to try it again. A mile. Then another the next weekend. And it felt good. My interest in it piqued Jonah’s and we even ran together a few times.

So six months after knee surgery I ran a half-marathon and Jonah ran a 5k. It was hard. It was raining. It felt nuts. And we both loved it. This time around I love running in a way I never did before. I feel so much joy in the ability to cover distance with my own two legs, which has been helped along by fun interesting running partners who are always up for it. I desperately hope these knees hold-up so I can keep going…

Jonah told us that when he crossed the finish line he felt “so proud.” Gotta admit, I feel the same.

Jonah ran with other families in the 5k since it was Lee’s turn to nurse a torn meniscus

As Jonah and a pal cross the finish, he’s met with a high five by his best friend since preschool.

Ear to ear grin at the finish.

Lilah is soaked from being out with Lee watching our respective races. She was a total trooper.

So proud, and so wet!

New York

My fall work trip. Stepped into the Oculus at the World Trade Center since it is just across the street from my office and it was quite a site, but in general the NY skies and views never disappoint.
